Adventure in Social Bookmarking- Diigo

I have used social bookmarking in the past more for personal use but this week I have spent more time exploring tags in reference to education, Web 2.0, etc, and I have found many great resources very quickly. Social bookmarking is something I have tried for a few years now. The problem I have is to remember to place my bookmarks in Diigo instead of only bookmarking them in my browser. I learned my lesson when my computer crashed a few months ago and I had to format my computer and start all over. I took for granted that my bookmarks would be saved in Firefox as they always were, but to my surprise they started a new system and I had to create a new account and lost all my bookmarks. I had many saved in Google Chrome but there were many in Firefox that will be forever lost. I recently installed the Diigo extension for Chrome and Firefox that eliminates the problem in remembering because it is quick and easy to remember to save bookmarks in Diigo. 

Having the ability to use tags to create my folksonomy will save a lot of time when I am browsing or searching for a specific topic. This is my first experience participating in a social bookmarking group. I will be exploring more groups to join in Diigo. Social bookmarking helps users to collaborate with others to work smarter, not harder in finding and sharing great resources. 

Adventure in Aggregating Pages

Aggregating pages is convenient online digital dashboard that is used to connect other Web 2.0 tools using a widget. At the beginning of my adventure in aggregating pages I was playing around with both  Netvibes and Protopage and I personally prefer Protopage. I can see advantages of using both but for this assignment I chose Protopage because I found it more user friendly and easier to add and customize widgets. With Protopage it was easy to connect my Blog, Wiki, YouTube playlist and Twitter searches in one convenient place. The most challenging part of setting up my page was to figure out how to add my YouTube playlist, but after a few minutes I had it completed. I like the fact that I can now go to one page to get updates and my page can be shared with others to view the information. I will continue looking for information and widgets to add to my Protopage since it is a very useful Web 2.0 tool.. I will be creating a personal Protopage in the near future which will be private to contain all my personal "goodies" such as weather, news headlines, and will make a great start page when I pull up my browser. Aggregating pages will be very useful in the classroom. All the Web 2.0 tools and websites the teacher needs can all be placed in one site for easy and convenient navigation. Teachers can set up aggregating pages such as Protopage and Netvibes to be used by parents and students. I will be using Protopage in my future classroom.

Twitter and YouTube Adventures

     This week I had the opportunity to explore YouTube and continue exploring Twitter. I have used YouTube for a few years and have upload videos in the past but I have never taken the time to deeply explore YouTube until this week. The assignment was to search different categories and create a playlist for each category. Until this assignment I was not aware I could even create a playlist.  While creating my playlist for Twitter and Twitter tools I learned more about using Twitter and the vast amount of resources in education that can be found. I also found many helpful videos on Wikispaces. YouTube is a great tool to use to learn how to set up and use web 2.0 tools for education. While searching for web 2.0 tools for learning I discovered many web 2.0 tools and videos to explain how to use them in the classroom. By creating a playlist I will have the ability to have access to the specific videos I chose to add to my playlist. There are many resources for teaching history that will benefit teachers and students to help make history more interesting and engaging. For the assignment we had the opportunity to create a playlist of our choice. I chose teaching/learning for English language learners. I found many resources on YouTube educators have posted that will help me teach English language learners more effectively. As I was working on the YouTube Adventure assignment, it is very clear that YouTube can be used for educational resources as well as entertainment purposes.

A list of hashtags related to education was provided as an assignment to look up on Twitter. I am astounded by the length of the list of hashtags that I can search for information and resources in education. I have set up a search on TweetDeck to keep me up to date on a few of the hashtags. The information and resources I have found during my YouTube and Twitter adventure has opened up many new resources to me as an educator. I will continue to explore and use these tools and learn from education professionals around the world.

Technology Evaluation of Web 2.0 Tools for Education

This week I worked in a group to evaluate 5 educational technologies based a Web 2.0 Technology Evaluation rubric the class created as an assignment in week 2. I chose to evaluate Blogger and Bookemon.

Description

            Blogger is a Web 2.0 course delivery technology that is free and easy to use. Blogger is user friendly and is very easy to set up. It is a social networking tool that can be used by students and teachers for sharing, reflecting and collaborating with one another and a larger audience if desired. Users have the ability to create posts that can include text, images, video and audio.

        Blogger can be used to design a whole course or for an occasional student activity. Blogger is an exceptional tool for students to use as a portfolio to promote student growth and also promote active student learning by having a collection of their work and the ability to analyze and assess their own progress. Blogger is an easy Web 2.0 tool and will be a great addition of technology to the course as a tool of communication for projects.

Student blogs will be set to private and only peers will see their posts. Students will be assigned usernames and will not publish their names online.

Pros:

• Provides the students that are shy an easier way to express themselves.
• Videos, images, audio,graphics, widgets, and many other types of technologies can be added to and published in the blog so the student can be creative.
• Help students develop a sense of audience, voice and ownership

Cons:  

• Lacks the educational support and features of Educational Blog sites such as Edublogs.
• Monitor to make sure security guidelines are followed.
• Getting all the students set up to ensure the proper security setting would be time consuming but if you are needing a free program it is worth it.
• Students must have a  Google email address to access Blogger.

Newspaper Article Project

Students will work in groups to create a newspaper article from the 1850-1860 time period that informs an authentic audience as well as the class about the Underground Railroad, the major figures, social issues, and slavery that led up to the civil war. Each group will choose different topic as their focus.  

Students are to learn about the major figures of the Underground Railroad, its purpose, the social effects, and the risks that were involved. The research plan will consist of students conducting research using internet searches, texts, documentaries,  and sources in the library to find information on major figures involved, runaway slave advertisements, and other relevant information for the topic.

Each group will contribute to a team blog and collaborate to create the groups newspaper article. The class will view and discuss each group's newspaper article.

By students using Blogger to publish their writing assignments they can be assessed online and help save the environment also since no paper will be used. The teacher can simply leave a comment for the student. I personally would use Blogger for writing assignments that are more focused on the thought process than technical writing.

Bookemon edCenter

Instructional Activity

Creative Writing

Students write an engaging story with a well-developed conflict and resolution, interesting and believable characters, a range of literary strategies (e.g., dialogue, suspense) and devices to enhance the plot, and sensory details that define the mood or tone.

Review narration, plot, theme, description, dialogue, and characterization with students.  

Discuss the elements of a short story such as a clear opening, body, and conclusion, and strong characters.

Discuss favorite movie surprises can help students creativity to develop the surprise in their story.

Create a Story Outline

Students can work in pairs or individually.

Students create a storyline which should include:

• At least two main characters
• Five  traits for each character (at least 3 of the traits should be unusual).
• Setting
• Three  plot events
• One surprise (minimum)

Working in pairs/teams can help students who have a phobia about creative writing get over their fears and talk through their ideas for the story.

Teacher should walk around the room giving feedback and asking questions about the characters and their traits to help students think through the personality of their characters.

Student Writing:

Once students have finished their outline and they begin the writing process, students will write the introduction to their story. Once students have written two to three paragraphs students work in pairs to peer review the story. The peer review will help students discover if their characters are interesting and if the story is off to a good start.

Students will continue the writing process and revise and edit their story.  Continue providing feedback and writing tips as you review each story.

The story should be at least 5 pages and students have one week to complete their story.

Publish:

Students will use Bookemon to create an eBook of the short story they created by using the graphics provided or students can draw the illustrations for their stories. Once the students have typed their stories and illustrated their books it can be saved as a .pdf eBook and printed. There is also an option of sharing the link of each students book with their family by email.
